Chapter 22

“Larry!” Linda Peterson screeched down the entryway behind her. “Get your butt out here right this instant!”

We’d arrived to Linda answering the door, and I’d gone right into my pleas to let Anika and Rodger get married here in a few short weeks. She hadn’t said a word, but her eyes had gone rounder and wider as I spoke. And now, she was yelling for her husband like he’d forgotten to cover the lid of the trash cans and racoons had gotten into them.

He stumbled into view, already in his pajamas, and rubbed the back of his head, white hair sticking up at all angles. “What do you want, woman? The Yankees are at the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded!” Even I knew that was a big deal.

He stopped short when he saw us, his mouth going thin.

“Did you get asked a favor by one of our favorite renters and turn them away?” Linda admonished. “We’ve been friends with these families for years!”

“We don’t have room for a wedding. Think of all the yard work I’d have to do.”

She shook her head. “Good! It would serve you right to get outside and get some exercise. We have to get the deck finished by July anyway––this will give you the push you need.” She nodded knowingly at us. “Larry’s doctor says he has high cholesterol. I’ve been feeding him fish every night, but I can’t get the lazy butt to do anything besides sit in that damn Lazyboy.”

“Ah, let a man enjoy his retirement in peace,” Larry grumbled.

She took my hands in hers. “Of course Anika can use the house for her wedding. What are the dates again?” Her smile lit up her aging face and added a special spark to her sweet blue eyes. “There’s so much to do! How can I help?”

I almost cried on the spot. I was at once relieved and excited.

We spent the next hour going over all the details. Linda knew everyone in town and was certain she could help us get vendors replaced. We were going to lose a bunch of deposits, but Linda insisted we only pay the nightly rate which was absolutely manageable on Rodger’s salary and a heck of a lot cheaper than the hotel ballroom they’d lost. All in all, they’d come out even if not even save some money.

“I’ve got it,” Teddy added to the conversation, pulling out his checkbook. “And I’m going to call the hotel tomorrow and insist they help rectify the situation. If they double booked, that’s on them. They should be covering the lost deposits.”

I gaped at him. I knew he loved Anika and knew they were both badass lawyers, but pulling out his own checkbook wasn’t expected. We finished up and walked to the door, planning to leave.

“You can’t drive home tonight,” Linda warned. “Absolutely not. They’re doing nightly road construction right now, it’ll take ages.” The Petersons’ kids were long since grown up, but she hadn’t lost that mom tone in her voice.
